KUPP | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, Ayl | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KUPP is essentially the peak of the Kupp vineyard, the prime parcel with an ideal exposure to the sun. Half-moon-shaped, it stretches around from an east through a southwest exposition, from the warming Saar into the cooler Saargau at a slope gradient of 35 to 70 percent. As a result, two contrasting microclimates with differing wine styles are found within one vineyard. The soil is rocky and comprised mostly of weathered blue-grey Devon slate with skeletal portions. Primarily Riesling grows here. History: The first documentation of a site named Kupp stems from the year 1304. The wines from this sight have been highly sought since 1850. In 1904, a bottler of Ayler Kupp cost 10 gold marks, while a Château d’Yquem cost only nine.
