KASTANIENBUSCH, Birkweiler | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KASTANIENBUSCH lies well protected from the wind in a convex swale at the foot of the Hohenberg between 180 and 300 metres a.s.l. Numerous chestnut (Kastanien) trees grow on the hill. The site is quite steep in places and due to the south exposition high temperatures can be reached during the day. The fairly high altitude brings much cooler temperatures in the night. The high diurnal fluctuation leads to early budbreak and a long ripening period, which is advantageous for aroma development. The diversity of the soil also makes the site quite unique. Rotliegend, a skeletal, very iron-rich slate is found in the GL KASTANIENBUSCH, just as is variegated sandstone debris and limestone with limestone marl stratifications and a bit of fine earth. Vintners have planted various grape varieties according to soil type. The slope gradient is between 15 and 30 percent.
