JOHANNISBERG, Wallhausen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® JOHANNISBERG rises impressively above Wallhausen with a slope gradient of up to 50 %. The terraced vineyard lies at 210 to 260 metres a.s.l. in the well-protected Gräfenbachtal, a side valley of the Nahe. Due to its steepness and south-facing aspect, solar radiation is extremely high in the GL JOHANNISBERG and the resulting wines are powerful. The soils are predominantly Rotliegend sandstone and slate from the Permian period that are covered with a layer of gravelly sand and gravelly loam. The vines are up to 50 years old with roots reaching 20 metres deep. History: The Johannisberg was mentioned quite early, in the 12th century, in a land registry of the Barons von Dalberg. It is among the oldest documented vineyards in Europe. There are also findings from older dates that reach back to the Romans.
