UHLEN ROTH LAY | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, Winningen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

“Roth” is the Old German word for the colour red, which is descriptive of the typical Mosel slate in the steep terraces of the VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® ROTH LAY*. High iron oxide content lends this rock its colour, which is also mixed with grey slate. This rocky slope rises from 80 to 200 metres a.s.l. at an extremely steep 100 to 150 % gradient. The Moselle River reflects the sunshine into this due south-facing site. The warmth is stored in the dry stone walls of the terraces and radiated into the vines at night. Worthy of note are the rare fauna that find a habitat in the non-mortared terrace walls of the GL UHLEN ROTH LAY and the neighbouring VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® vineyards. The European green lizards and numerous types of beetle help keep the soils loose. The rare Apollo butterflies that are native here highlight the beauty of this vineyard.
