ENGELSTEIN, Boppard, Spay | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® ENGELSTEIN is situated on a steep slope with a 60 % gradient in Boppard in the Mittelrhein. It forms the eastern border of the Bopparder Hamm vineyard that is named after the adjacent district of Boppard, Hamm. The GL ENGLSTEIN is located directly on the Rhine River between 80 and 160 metres a.s.l. The southern exposition provides the Riesling that grows here with sunshine into the evening hours. The abundant European green lizards that live between the vines bask in the sunny microclimate. The soil is Devon slate, which shimmers reddish due to its iron content. The pumice interstratifications are of volcanic origin and stem from the Eifel maar. History: The Roman military camp Bodobrica was built in Boppard in the 4th century. Because wine belonged to the military’s standard nourishment, it is assumed that grapes were cultivated in Bopparder Hamm at that time. Written documents dating 643 confirm wine cultivation in Boppard at that time.
