GRÄFENBERG, Kiedrich | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

With up to 60 percent gradient, the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® GRÄFENBERG is among the steepest sites in the Rheingau. The 11-hectare south to west facing slope lies in the protected Kiedrich Valley, but is well-aerated by fall winds from the Taunus Mountains, which helps prolong the hanging period. The soil is medium to deep stony-gritty phyllite and a share of loess loam is advantageous to water storage capacity. The vines root deeply in the stony soil. The site lies at 230 metres a.s.l. and is planted with Riesling. History: “Graf” translates to “duke” and “Berg” to “mountain”. The Grafenberg was mentioned as early as the 12th century as the “Mons Rhingravii”. The wine from this site achieved its first international fame as Robert Weil delivered a Riesling Auslese from the legendary 1893 vintage to numerous kings and imperial courts.
