STEINBERGER, Hattenheim | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® STEINBERGER is surrounded with stone walls that are up to five metres high and border Kloster Eberbach. The walls once served to protect the vineyard from grape thieves, but they also shield from cold air from the neighbouring forest. The vineyard lies at 120 to 200 metres a.s.l. and has an impressive steepness of 35 to 40 %. The soils are comprised of sandy and clayey loam. THE GL STEINBERGER is a monopole vineyard that belongs to the Hessische Staatsweingüter. History: The vineyard can be traced back to the Cistercian monks that once dwelled in Kloster Eberbach. It was recorded in the estate records from 1211 as “Oculus Memorie”. The wine laws of 1971 register “Steinberg” as a village of Hattenheim and thus Hattenheim does not additionally appear on the label.
