German Champions: The multiple faces of Riesling

German Rieslings are world champions – unique in quality and style. The credit for regaining their outstanding reputation belongs to VDP.  VDP is the oldest national association of premium wine estates worldwide, encompassing about 200 German wineries committed to terroir-driven viticulture. Unlike conventional German wine law, VDP has re-established a vineyard classification comparable to the Burgundian approach and based on quality of vineyard site. This tasting will showcase the amazing potential and variability of Riesling through the wines of some of Germany’s best producers. The first samples will track the VDP classification from a quality regional style up to a highly complex single vineyard wine. They will be followed by an oldie but goldie as the potential to age over decades is one of the strongest features of the variety. But no portrait of Riesling would be complete without demonstrating its outstanding ability to balance sweetness and freshness, with the last two wines representing the traditional predicates.

The tasting will be hosted by Caro Maurer MW. Riesling seems to be part of Caro’s DNA and it is evidently one of her major topics when working as a wine writer or when holding educational seminars and tastings with German wines around the world.
