Julius Weber founded a remarkable wine estate in 1860. Even then he owned the finest parcels of the site Burrweiler Schäwer. A century later, Herbert Messmer and his wife Elisabeth purchased the estate and gave it its present name. The buildings, all with cellars beneath them, bear witness to tradition and down-to-earth character. The estate experienced its greatest development in the 80s and 90s, when it expanded its vineyard area and implemented measures to improve grape quality. At the same time, many small improvements were made in the cellar. As quality of the wines increased, the estate established an excellent reputation far beyond the borders of the Pfalz and Germany. “One sip begs for another” is how Messmer describes his wines, particularly when the wines show character and rough edges. That’s precisely what makes many a wine all the more interesting.
