Domäne Schloss Johannisberg

Director Stefan Doktor and Marcel Szopa together with their team feel their work at the world’s oldest Riesling wine estate is bound with a commitment to tradition. Schloss Johannisberg Rieslings are full-bodied and rich in minerals. The estate’s 900-year-old viticultural tradition is closely related to the recognition of the merits of a Spätlese (late harvest) and the ensuing development of all the other Prädikat levels. Well worth a visit are the historical cask cellar from 1721 and the former monastery cellar built nine centuries ago. Production focuses on wines of substance with considerable volume and a fine, spicy fruitiness in tandem with a marked acidity. They have great aging potential. Proof of the cellar master’s particular instinct for winemaking are the rarities lying in the Bibliotheca subterranea, the underground library. Limited yields, selective harvesting by hand, handling the young wines very gently, and aging in oak casks are all essential to producing the caliber of Riesling wines that are the basis of Schloss Johannisberg’s world renown.
