History of the regional associations

Wine auctions significantly helped to promote the production of high-quality “natural,” or unchaptalized, wines. Auctions in Germany have been held sporadically since the end of the 18th century, and on a regular basis as of the mid-19th century. Starting in 1897, growers who sold their natural wines at auction formed the first regional associations. These, in turn, joined forces in 1910 to form a national association, the Verband Deutscher Naturweinversteigerer e.V. – the forerunner of today’s VDP.
